NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Sunday warned of launching fresh protests, alleging that authorities had violated an agreement by arresting and harassing student protesters despite assurances that no legal action would be taken against them.
In a post on X, CJP national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said there had been a “complete breach of the agreement regarding no police action against the protestors.”
He claimed that “hundreds of students” had been arrested in Bihar and West Bengal, while many others were being harassed in Delhi.
Ranka demanded the immediate withdrawal of all FIRs filed against the protesters, the release of detained students and a commitment that no new cases would be filed by the Delhi Police, central investigative agencies or police in BJP-ruled or allied states.
He warned that the party would resume its protest if the demands were not met. He also called on the government to share a written copy of the agreement on legal cases and a timeline for its implementation.
CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said the party had been providing legal assistance to protesters since the beginning of the movement. He urged Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh to honour the government’s commitment by ensuring the release of detained protesters across the country.
Das said the decision to suspend the protest had been taken in good faith based on the government’s assurances, adding that CJP would continue monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, following reports of student arrests in Bihar, All India Students’ Association President Neha Bora arrived in Patna on July 27 and condemned the action.
“Arresting students and invoking serious charges such as attempt to murder against them for protesting is unacceptable,” she said, urging the government to withdraw all cases against protesters.
She warned that Bihar could witness protests similar to those in Delhi if the assurances were not honoured.
The CJP suspended its 36-day protest after the Centre accepted its key demand for the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. According to the party, Union ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh had assured that no action would be taken against peaceful protesters.
The agitation began on June 20 over alleged examination irregularities and culminated in a 26-day hunger strike by Sonam Wangchuk before being withdrawn following the government’s assurances.
