Abhijit Deepke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), has challenged the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the party’s plan to hoist the national flag at Central Park in Connaught Place, New Delhi, on Friday (October 16).
The announcement came after authorities declared on Thursday that Central Park would remain closed on October 16 and 17.
At a press conference, Deepke questioned the decision, asking whether authorities would shut down 100 locations if the party announced plans to hoist the national flag at 100 different places.
He also questioned whether the same restrictions would apply to political rallies.
“If we say tomorrow that we will go to Narendra Modi’s rally and hoist the Tiranga, will you cancel that rally too? What a strange thing!” he said.
Deepke urged the authorities to officially declare that they would not hoist the national flag, arguing that such a position would amount to betrayal. He added that no previous prime minister or government had taken such a step.
He also alleged that he was under surveillance, claiming that vehicles without number plates were following him and that Intelligence Bureau (IB) personnel were stationed outside his home, seeking information.
Deepke said Delhi Police might detain him on Thursday night or Friday morning but insisted that the measures would not intimidate his party.
He also referred to the arrests of two CJP colleagues, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Rankar.
Questioning Modi’s attitude towards the national flag, Deepke asked why the prime minister “hates the Tiranga” and whether he was fit to remain in office if that were the case.
