Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that nothing has changed in the past five months, alleging that bribery continues in government offices, while Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is making efforts to bring meaningful changes.
Speaking at a discussion marking July Martyrs’ Day, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the DFP Auditorium in the capital on Thursday, Fakhrul said, “Nothing has changed in the last five months. Those who used to take bribes are still doing so—in fact, the rate of bribery has increased. Good initiatives continue to be obstructed. Many have simply changed their appearance and now claim to be the biggest July fighters.”
Sharing his experience as a minister over the past four to five months, he said he had expected to witness real reforms but had yet to see the desired changes within the system.
However, Fakhrul expressed optimism, saying he has seen a genuine commitment to reform in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“I do see change in one person—that is Tarique Rahman. He is trying. He is setting new precedents,” he said.
Referring to the August 5 movement and the sacrifices made by its participants, Fakhrul said the nation had paid a heavy price for change.
“If we fail to uphold those sacrifices and do not strive for real change, the tears shed by the mothers of the martyrs will have been in vain,” he added.
The senior BNP leader said the sacrifices made by the martyrs of the July movement must never be allowed to go in vain.
He said the only way to honour their sacrifice is to establish democracy, ensure justice, and bring about the state reforms the people aspire to.
