The opening ceremony of the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup National Football Tournament in Chattogram has been postponed by one month and will now be held in September due to recent floods and adverse weather conditions.

However, Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon said the tournament itself will proceed according to the previously announced schedule.

Speaking at a press conference at the Chattogram Press Club on Thursday, Milon said the government had originally planned to inaugurate the tournament on August 9, but the event was deferred because of the flood situation in Chattogram, the ongoing examinations under the Chattogram Education Board, and incomplete preparations.

“We requested the Prime Minister yesterday to postpone the opening ceremony by one month, and he has approved the proposal. The inauguration will now be held on September 9 or 10 instead of August,” the minister said.

He added that participants from every upazila across the country would take part in the tournament, and the opening ceremony would be launched simultaneously nationwide from Chattogram Stadium.

Responding to a question on whether the entire tournament schedule would also be delayed, Milon said only the formal inauguration had been postponed.

“Our programme will continue as planned. Only the opening ceremony has been deferred by one month. Given the adverse weather and recent flooding in Chattogram, it would not have been practical to hold the ceremony now,” he said.
