A 20-year-old female patient died after falling from the eighth-floor balcony of the new building at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Riya Begum, a resident of Bhadurdangi village in Pabna Sadar upazila.

Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH Police Camp confirmed the incident.

Hospital sources said Riya had been undergoing treatment in Ward 802 of the Medicine Department. At around 3:30 am, she fell from the ward’s balcony onto a vehicle parked below. She was rescued in a critically injured condition and taken to the hospital’s emergency department, where doctors declared her dead after examination.

According to family members, Riya had been experiencing mental health-related problems, and her behaviour had changed noticeably over the past 10 days.

Her father, Latif Mallik, said she had been admitted to the hospital with sores on her tongue and other physical complications. He said attendants of a nearby patient alerted him after noticing Riya heading toward the balcony. Although he rushed to stop her, she fell before he could reach her.

Latif also said Riya had married her husband, Al Amin, who works in Singapore, several years ago through a mobile-phone marriage arrangement. He added that in recent days she had at times laughed without apparent reason and spoken incoherently.

Police said the body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy, and Shahbagh Police Station has been informed. Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
