The absence of proper attire among on-duty doctors at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) makes it difficult to distinguish whether someone is a doctor, nurse or broker, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Justice AKM Asaduzzaman has said.
An ACC team conducted an inspection at the hospital on Thursday afternoon and ordered show-cause notices against doctors found absent from their designated rooms.
The ACC chairman said patients frequently complain about inadequate treatment and the absence of doctors at the hospital. He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was also concerned about the situation and had recently visited several hospitals, including Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
During the inspection, the ACC team found several doctors absent from their rooms, including Dr Tanvir of the emergency department and the head of the neurosurgery department.
“None of the on-duty doctors in the emergency department was wearing identifiable attire. It was difficult to tell whether they were doctors, nurses or brokers,” he said.
He added that some doctors were reportedly outside for personal reasons, including having tea, while patients were running around looking for medical supplies.
“We have instructed the hospital director to issue show-cause notices to the absent doctors. We will also take legal action,” he said.
