Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the government’s legal reform initiatives will be implemented in line with the July Charter, with work underway to complete the necessary amendments.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a tree plantation programme and month-long tree fair at the old Deputy Commissioner’s Court premises in Jhenaidah on Friday, the minister said the government is committed to carrying out the proposed reforms.

He said the interim government had issued 133 ordinances based on the recommendations of the Law Reform Commission, adding that the current government has accepted almost all of those reforms.

A special committee has been formed to review and amend the remaining issues in accordance with the July Charter, he added.

Responding to a question about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina returning to Bangladesh, the minister said the government would act strictly in accordance with the law.

“If she wants to return, the government will take the necessary legal steps. She has said she will return on her own. If she does, she will face the court. The government will do nothing outside the law,” he said.

Commenting on the case filed over the attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders in Habiganj, the minister said the filing of the case itself showed that the government does not interfere in the functioning of the judiciary, police or law enforcement agencies.

The inaugural programme was also attended by State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan, Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Noman Hossain, and District Council Administrator M A Majid.
