Disney+ has reversed its earlier renewal decision and canceled Marvel’s Wonder Man, ending the superhero series after just one season despite previously greenlighting a second installment.
The series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the title role and Ben Kingsley, becomes the latest live-action Marvel show on Disney+ to end after a single season, either by design or cancellation.
Wonder Man made a promising debut in late January, attracting 618 million minutes of viewing during its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. However, the series quickly dropped out of the top 10 original streaming shows in subsequent weeks.
Despite its declining viewership, the show was well received by critics and audiences, earning strong review scores. Abdul-Mateen also received an Emmy nomination for his performance as the lead character.
With Wonder Man canceled, only Loki and Daredevil: Born Again remain the only live-action Marvel series on Disney+ to have run for more than one season. While WandaVision, Agatha All Along and the upcoming VisionQuest are connected within the same storyline, they are separate series.
The second season had been expected to reunite co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, who served as executive producers alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz and Marvel Television and Animation chief Brad Winderbaum. Guest also served as showrunner, while Cretton directed several episodes.
The cast included X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Olivia Thirlby, Dan Donohue and Kameron J. Meadows.
Disney+ has not publicly disclosed the reason behind the decision to cancel the series after initially approving a second season.
