US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, , visited several Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Friday to assess the humanitarian situation of more than 1.2 million Rohingya who fled persecution in Myanmar.
During the visit, many Rohingya refugees held up placards appealing for international support to facilitate their return to Myanmar. One placard read: “You have a home, we miss our home,” underscoring their demand for a safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation.
Gor arrived at Cox’s Bazar Airport at 11:55 am, leading an 11-member high-level delegation. Accompanied by the US Ambassador to Bangladesh and other US government officials, the delegation travelled directly to the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya under tight security.
The delegation visited the (WFP)’s operations at Camp-4, as well as the Extension-8 West and Camp-6 settlements. They reviewed humanitarian assistance programmes and received briefings from officials on refugees’ living conditions, food assistance, education, healthcare, security and other relief activities.
The delegation also spoke with several Rohingya refugees to hear firsthand about their experiences, expectations and the challenges they continue to face.
According to the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), the delegation later held a meeting with government officials, UN agencies and development partners at the commissioner’s office in the afternoon.
The discussions focused on the current state of the Rohingya crisis, the need for sustained international assistance, camp management, and efforts to achieve a durable solution through the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Gor arrived in Dhaka on Thursday for a three-day official visit. Later that day, he met Foreign Minister at the State Guest House Padma to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including the Rohingya crisis.
