A strong earthquake struck southern Italy on Friday, sending frightened residents rushing out of their homes and onto the streets as buildings shook across the Naples area.

The magnitude 4.7 quake hit the Campi Flegrei volcanic region near Naples at a shallow depth of about 3 kilometres, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

The tremor caused power outages, disrupted local train and metro services, and resulted in minor damage to several buildings. Emergency authorities said there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries, while firefighters received no urgent rescue requests.

Italian media described the quake as one of the strongest ever recorded in the Campi Flegrei area. Many residents, fearing aftershocks, spent hours outside their homes.

Campi Flegrei, a densely populated volcanic caldera west of Naples, has experienced increasing seismic activity in recent years, prompting authorities to strengthen monitoring and preparedness measures.
