After demolishing expectations in its opening weekend, The Odyssey set new box-office records in its sophomore frame. Christopher Nolan’s epic delivered the biggest second-weekend haul of his illustrious career, beating the previous record of $75 million, set by The Dark Knight in 2008.
That film went on to gross more than $500 million domestically and more than $1 billion worldwide. It was eventually overtaken at the worldwide box office by The Dark Knight Rises, which remains Nolan’s highest-grossing hit.
The Odyssey is currently tracking to eclipse the lifetime global hauls of both superhero movies to become Nolan’s most successful film.
As an illustration of just how massive the film is already, consider this: it took just 13 days to surpass a domestic box office milestone that Nolan’s previous hit, Oppenheimer, passed in 595 days.
Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey has received some of the best reviews of Nolan’s career, which is saying something. Remember, Oppenheimer won Nolan his first Best Director and Best Picture Oscars.
Released in 2023, that movie defied expectations to gross nearly $1 billion in its lifetime global run. It now holds a 93% critics’ score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, while The Odyssey is currently sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 94% score.
The aggregator’s consensus reads, “Reinvigorating an ancient adventure with majestic sweep and sterling work by its colossal ensemble, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey imbues myth with primal human feeling.”
In its second weekend, The Odyssey grossed $90 million at the domestic box office, pushing its running haul past the $300 million mark. Including the $360 million-plus that the film has grossed internationally, its global total now stands at over $700 million.
The Odyssey not only beat The Dark Knight’s second-weekend haul, but its global total makes it one of the 200 highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide.
Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, the movie has now overtaken the lifetime global hauls of recent hits such as F1, Wonka, and James Gunn’s Superman — all in just 10 days of release.
This week, after spending just 13 days in release at the domestic box office, The Odyssey will slay Oppenheimer’s lifetime haul of $330 million — a total that the thematically similar biographical epic amassed over 595 days.
