Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has overtaken Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, earning $1.352 billion globally.
Universal Pictures confirmed Thursday that the mythological epic surpassed the $1.338 billion worldwide haul of Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released in July 2024.
Starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey has enjoyed a remarkable box office run since its July 17 release. The film has earned $516.3 million in North America, while its global total has reached $1.352 billion.
The film has also become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie worldwide, surpassing his 2012 blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises.
Ryan Reynolds, who plays the wisecracking mercenary Deadpool, congratulated The Odyssey on social media and appeared to embrace the loss of the record.
“Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time,” Reynolds wrote. “That is one helluva car.”
Reynolds’ post included clips from Deadpool & Wolverine showing Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine battling inside a Honda Odyssey minivan—a playful reference to the title of Nolan’s film.
The record adds another milestone to The Odyssey‘s strong theatrical performance and marks a major achievement for Nolan’s latest film.
