At least 27 people were killed and 39 others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in Algeria’s Boumerdès Province, authorities said.

The crash occurred near El Karma, about 50 kilometres east of the capital, Algiers, while the bus was travelling from the eastern city of Sétif.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and launched a large-scale rescue operation, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. No immediate details were released on what triggered the crash.

Road accidents remain a major concern in Algeria, where speeding, dangerous roads and traffic violations contribute to a high number of fatalities each year.
