A Bangladesh delegation led by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood met Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on Tuesday as the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh’s ambassador to Algeria accompanied the delegation during the courtesy call.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Iqbal Hassan Mahmood highlighted significant opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, agriculture, fertilisers, education, science, technology, sports and culture.

He emphasised the need to boost trade and investment in the energy sector and urged Algerian authorities to arrange knowledge-sharing and training programmes for engineers and energy experts.

State Minister Kobir welcomed the signing of the MoU on hydrocarbons cooperation, saying it could open new avenues for Bangladesh to import liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other petroleum products from Algeria under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.

He said the agreement could also facilitate the exchange of best practices in LNG infrastructure development and create opportunities for cooperation in coal and gas exploration in Bangladesh.

Kobir also stressed the importance of high-level visits to further strengthen bilateral ties.
