Dhaka: A total of 458 road accidents across Bangladesh claimed 416 lives and left 629 people injured in July 2026, according to a report released by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) on Thursday.
Among the victims were 57 women and 48 children. Motorcycle accidents alone claimed 138 lives, accounting for 33.17 percent of the total fatalities.
The organization said the report was prepared using data collected from nine national daily newspapers, 17 national and regional online news portals, electronic media, and its own sources.
According to the report, 159 motorcycle accidents occurred during the month, representing 34.71 percent of all road crashes. A total of 106 pedestrians were killed, making up 25.48 percent of all fatalities, while 51 drivers and their assistants also lost their lives.
In terms of vehicle categories, 94 three-wheeler passengers, 26 passengers of locally made vehicles, 21 bus passengers, and 19 passengers of trucks, covered vans, pickups, and trolleys were killed.
By road type, national highways recorded the highest number of crashes, with 169 accidents, followed by 155 on regional roads, 61 on rural roads, and 66 on urban roads.
The report found that 164 accidents were caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles, 123 resulted from head-on collisions, 108 involved vehicles hitting pedestrians, and 54 occurred when vehicles crashed into the rear of another vehicle.
The Road Safety Foundation said a total of 711 vehicles were involved in road accidents during July. These included 172 motorcycles, 131 three-wheelers, and 124 buses.
Time-based analysis showed that the highest number of accidents occurred in the morning, accounting for 28.82 percent of all crashes, while 19.43 percent took place at night.
Division-wise, Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of road accidents, with 133 crashes that killed 125 people. Chattogram Division reported 99 accidents and 80 deaths, while Rajshahi Division recorded 52 accidents and 50 fatalities. Barishal Division had the lowest number of accidents, with 28 crashes resulting in 24 deaths.
