At least 16 people were killed and several others injured in two separate road accidents in Sylhet and Bogura within a span of two hours on Friday morning.
The accidents occurred between 5am and 7am on August 7.
In Sylhet, nine people, including a child, were killed when two passenger buses collided head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Osmaninagar around 7am.
According to Zainal Abedin, inspector (investigation) of Osmaninagar Police Station, a Dhaka-bound Unique Paribahan bus collided head-on with a Sylhet-bound Bengal Sleeper Coach in the Kashikapan area. The impact caused the Unique bus to lose control and plunge into a roadside ditch.
Seven passengers of the Unique bus were killed on the spot. A three-year-old child was critically injured and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared the child dead. Another injured passenger later died at the hospital.
Police, highway police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The bodies were recovered and handed over to Sherpur Highway Police.
In Bogura, seven day labourers were killed and at least 15 others injured when a bus ran over them in the Erulia Silkibandha area of Bogura Sadar around 5:30am.
The injured were rescued by Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel and taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Bogura Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Ataur Rahman confirmed the deaths.
Police and eyewitnesses said a Naogaon-bound Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan bus, coming from Dhaka, reached the Erulia Silkibandha area amid drizzle around 5:30am.
The driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to hit an electricity pole before ploughing into a group of day labourers who were waiting nearby for work.
Three labourers died on the spot.
The identities of four of the deceased were confirmed as Amirul Islam and Nur Alam of Gobindaganj in Gaibandha; Belal Hossain of Fapor area in Bogura Sadar; and Tajmul of Joypurhat.
