Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Chattogram on Sunday for a day-long tour, during which he will attend several programmes in Banshkhali, Fatikchhari and Hathazari upazilas before meeting BNP leaders from the Chattogram city, north and south districts.
The prime minister will distribute new homes and rehabilitation assistance among people affected by recent floods in Banshkhali and Hathazari.
He is also scheduled to pay a courtesy visit to Shah Muhibullah Babunagari, amir of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, at Al-Jamiatul Islamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari.
Later, he will visit Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari.
The prime minister is scheduled to return to Dhaka on Sunday night after meeting party leaders and activists at the auditorium of the five-star Radisson Blu Bay View Hotel in Chattogram.
Tarique Rahman, chairman of the BNP, last addressed a public rally at Chattogram’s Polo Ground on January 25, ahead of the national election.
Although he was scheduled to visit the Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari in April to meet Hefazat chief Shah Muhibullah Babunagari after forming the government, the programme was later cancelled. This will be Tarique Rahman’s first visit to Chattogram since taking office as prime minister.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia said Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit the district on August 9 to meet people affected by recent hill runoff and heavy rains in Banshkhali and Hathazari.
After arriving in Chattogram on Sunday, the prime minister will travel by helicopter to Baharchhara Union in Banshkhali. At 12:20pm, he will attend a rehabilitation programme at the West Banshkhali High School and College field for people affected by the recent floods.
According to a Chattogram district administration press release, the prime minister will hand over new homes and keys to 100 families who lost their houses in the floods. He will also distribute relief materials and provide assistance to people with disabilities. Rehabilitation assistance will also be distributed among flood-affected families in Hathazari.
After the Banshkhali programme, Tarique Rahman will fly to Pehelgazi Dighi field in Fatikchhari, landing there around 1:30pm. From there, he will travel by road to Al-Jamiatul Islamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar Madrasa.
At around 2pm, he is scheduled to meet Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Amir Shah Muhibullah Babunagari at the madrasa.
Azizul Haque, joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, told bdnews24.com that religious scholars and people from different walks of life would welcome the prime minister at the madrasa.
“A courtesy meeting between the prime minister and leading religious scholars will be held at the madrasa. In the presence of Hefazat Amir Shah Muhibullah Babunagari, we will present our demands to the prime minister,” he said.
He added that the district administration and law enforcement agencies were coordinating with them to ensure security and make other arrangements for the visit.
From Fatikchhari, the prime minister will travel by road to Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Uloom Muinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari.
According to Azizul Haque, Tarique Rahman will visit the graves of former Hefazat amirs Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi and Allama Junaid Babunagari at the Hathazari madrasa.
Later, at 5pm, the prime minister will attend a rehabilitation programme at Hathazari Government College field for people affected by the recent floods.
Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin told bdnews24.com that preparations were underway for the prime minister’s visit, including the construction of a stage at the venue.
In the evening, Tarique Rahman will hold an interaction with BNP leaders at the auditorium of Radisson Blu Bay View Hotel in Chattogram.
Abul Hashem Bakker, member secretary of Chattogram Metropolitan BNP, told bdnews24.com that the prime minister would meet organisational leaders from the metropolitan, north and south districts.
“We are ready. The leaders are very enthusiastic about the meeting. All Chattogram leaders will have the opportunity to sit together with the party chairman,” he said.
