A short special session of the Jatiya Sangsad will be convened for the election of the country’s 23rd president, Chief Whip of the ruling party Nurul Islam Moni said on Thursday.
He told reporters that parliament would hold a special session to facilitate the presidential election, although he did not specify when the session would be convened.
Earlier on Thursday, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the 23rd presidential election.
According to the schedule, nomination papers can be submitted on August 13. Scrutiny of the nominations will take place on August 16, while August 18 is the deadline for withdrawal of candidacies.
Voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber from 2pm to 5pm on August 20.
Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin will serve as the returning officer for the election.
Under the Constitution, members of parliament will elect the president through secret ballot. However, if only one candidate remains valid, no voting will be required.
Former president Md Sahabuddin resigned on July 24. Since then, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has been performing the duties of the president.
