US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen expressed his admiration after visiting the traditional floating guava market and guava orchards in Bhimruli, Jhalakathi, on Sunday.
Christensen visited the floating market and several guava orchards in Bhimruli on Sunday morning accompanied by his wife, Diane Dow.
During the visit, he spoke with local guava growers and orchard owners and learned about guava cultivation, production and marketing.
After the visit, Christensen said he was impressed by Bhimruli’s natural beauty and its traditional floating guava market.
“The vibrant activity at the market, the hard work of the farmers and the quality of the guavas produced here have impressed me,” he said.
Christensen noted that guavas are also cultivated in the warm and tropical regions of the United States, including Florida, Hawaii and parts of California, although production is limited.
“There is potential for Bangladesh to export guavas to the United States and other international markets,” he said, adding that he would discuss the matter with his government and relevant ministries.
The floating guava market in Bhimruli is one of southern Bangladesh’s traditional agricultural tourism destinations. During the monsoon, boats carrying guavas navigate the canals and waterways, creating a unique marketplace that attracts tourists from home and abroad.
Local orchard owners said the ambassador’s visit has encouraged guava growers in the area.
