The Appellate Division has ordered a status quo on all types of construction within the boundaries of the archaeological area of historic Mahasthangarh in Bogura.
The court also granted the government permission to appeal against a 2012 High Court verdict that directed the authorities to preserve Mahasthangarh.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury passed the order after hearing the matter on Sunday.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal represented the government, while senior lawyer Manzil Morshed appeared for Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), the organisation that filed the writ petition.
