A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the detention of actor Salman Shah murder case accused Ashraful Haque Don, named as accused No. 8 in the case.

After a hearing at around 5pm, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana granted a petition filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and ordered Don to be sent to jail.

The CID had opposed his release on bail, saying his release could hamper the ongoing investigation and create a risk of him going into hiding again.

According to the CID report submitted to the court, Don had remained absconding for a long time. He was brought into police custody and was being questioned in connection with the case.

The investigation agency argued that if released on bail, he might go into hiding again, potentially disrupting the investigation. It therefore sought his detention in jail.

Don was detained by immigration officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5am on Sunday and was subsequently taken to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. He was kept in the court lock-up before being produced before the magistrate for the afternoon hearing.

Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi confirmed the development.

According to the case statement, actor Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon, popularly known as Salman Shah, was allegedly killed on Sept 6, 1996, in a pre-planned act carried out jointly by the accused named in the case and unidentified individuals.
