The 103rd birth anniversary of legendary Bangladeshi artist S M Sultan is being observed today, August 10, with various programmes in Narail.

Born on August 10, 1924, in Machimdia village of Narail, Sultan became renowned for his powerful paintings depicting rural Bangladesh, particularly the lives and struggles of peasants.

His distinctive works often portrayed farmers with strong, muscular physiques, symbolising the strength of the rural population.

The SM Sultan Foundation and Narail district administration have organised a daylong programme at the Sultan Smriti Sangrahasala to mark the occasion.

The programme includes Quran recitation, tributes and prayers at his grave, a children’s painting competition and exhibition, an art camp, discussions, an award ceremony and cultural performances.

Sultan received the Ekushey Padak in 1982, the Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and the Independence Award in 1993 for his contributions to fine arts. Cambridge University also honoured him with the title “Man of Asia” in 1982.

He died on October 10, 1994, but his artistic legacy continues to influence generations of Bangladeshi artists.
