The 32nd death anniversary of renowned Bangladeshi artist SM Sultan is being observed today, October 10, with various programmes in Narail.

The district administration and SM Sultan Foundation have organised a daylong programme to commemorate the artist.

The activities include paying tribute at his grave, offering prayers, holding a discussion and organising a prize-giving ceremony.

A painting competition for children and teenagers is also being held.

Born on August 10, 1924, in Machhimdia village of Narail, Sultan was widely known for his powerful portrayals of rural life and the struggles of working people.

His paintings prominently featured muscular farmers, agricultural activities and the landscape of rural Bangladesh.

Affectionately known as Lal Mia, Sultan received formal art training at the Kolkata Government Art College after developing an early interest in painting.

His works were exhibited in several countries, including India, Pakistan, the United States and the United Kingdom.

In 1950, his paintings were displayed at an international exhibition in Europe alongside works by renowned artists, including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

Sultan received the Ekushey Padak in 1982 and the Independence Award in 1993 in recognition of his contributions to art.

He was also recognised as a resident artist by the Bangladesh government in 1984.

Beyond painting, Sultan was deeply committed to nurturing children’s creativity.
