Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has said that while people can sing freely, marks cannot be awarded freely in examination scripts.

He made the remark while responding to reporters’ questions at an event organised by the Education Ministry on Monday to announce the results of the SSC and equivalent examinations.

A journalist asked the minister why the press conference had not been particularly festive and whether he had given rather diplomatic answers.

“You can make it festive. I have said that you can sing freely, but you cannot give marks freely in examination scripts. What more can I say?” the minister replied.

The education minister said the results this year were not bad, describing them as “good.”

Responding to another question, he said students had been awarded the marks they actually earned. He also said students would now have the opportunity to have their answer scripts reviewed and reassessed.

Previously, students dissatisfied with their results could only seek re-scrutiny, under which examiners checked whether there had been errors in adding or recording marks or any major mistakes in evaluating answers. The scripts were not re-evaluated.

Under the new system, however, students will have the opportunity to have their answer scripts fully reviewed or reassessed as part of the re-scrutiny process.
