Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said Bangladesh, weakened by more than 15 years of what he described as fascist rule, must now be rebuilt.
He made the remarks on Monday at the national conference on a five-year strategic framework for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
The prime minister said prolonged “fascist exploitation and rule” had turned Bangladesh into a debt-dependent and import-dependent fragile state.
He said weaknesses had emerged across sectors including education, healthcare and the environment, making reconstruction of the country a key priority.
Rahman said the government had taken steps to implement a five-year strategic economic framework aimed at ensuring prosperity for the people.
The framework aligns the country’s national development plans with the United Nations’ SDGs, he said.
He also said BNP’s policies and programmes were designed to be people-oriented.
Referring to the 19-point programme of former president Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia’s Vision 2030 and the party’s 31-point state reform plan, he said these initiatives were broadly consistent with the vision and objectives of the Millennium Development Goals and the SDGs.
The prime minister said the government’s policy was to build a “Bangladesh for all” and planned to gradually bring citizens under social protection and financial assistance programmes during its current term.
As part of the SDG localisation initiative, three villages—Mitingachhari in Rangamati’s Kaptai, Pankhali in Khulna’s Dacope and Nafanagar in Dinajpur’s Bochaganj—have been selected as pilot SDG villages.
