Bangladesh have secured direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, ending weeks of uncertainty over their place in the tournament.
The development also means two-time world champions West Indies will have to go through the Qualifier to earn a place at the 2027 World Cup. It will be the third consecutive World Cup in which the Caribbean side have been forced to take the qualifying route.
The direct qualification race had primarily involved Bangladesh, Afghanistan and West Indies. Afghanistan secured their place first after beating Ireland in Belfast, while the result also confirmed Bangladesh’s position among the teams heading directly to the World Cup.
Under the qualification system, the highest-ranked eligible teams in the ICC ODI rankings at the September 30 cut-off will qualify directly, alongside the host nations. With South Africa and Zimbabwe hosting the 2027 tournament, the rankings equation leaves Bangladesh safely inside the direct qualification places.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will join Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, South Africa and Zimbabwe among the teams set to qualify directly for the tournament.
West Indies still have two ODIs against India before the September 30 cut-off. However, their remaining matches cannot lift them above Bangladesh in the rankings sufficiently to reclaim a direct World Cup berth.
As a result, Bangladesh can now look ahead to the 2027 World Cup without having to negotiate the Qualifier, while West Indies face another qualifying campaign to secure their place in the global showpiece.
