Failed SSC exam students at Ramerchar High School in Sherpur Sadar Upazila and their guardians locked the teachers in a room from outside on Monday afternoon. They later released the teachers after agreeing to two demands.
According to police and local sources, 78 students from the school participated in this year’s SSC examination. Of these, 21 passed. Local residents claim that none of the 21 who passed are local students, but are students from different schools in the city.
After the results were released, angry students and parents went to the school premises and protested. At one point, they locked the teachers in a room.
Later, the school’s headmaster Rasheda Begum informed the District Secondary Education Officer about the matter. On receiving information from her, law enforcers form Sadar Police Station reached the spot and rescued the teachers and brought the situation under control.
Police and local sources said the lock was opened after the students and their parents agreed to two demands. One of the demands was that the teachers should bear the cost of re-examining the records of the failed students (board challenge). Another was that the teachers should also pay the cost of filling out the forms for the students to re-sit the exams for the failed ones in 2027.
However, the school’s headmaster Rasheda Begum denied the allegations. She said that the teachers did not show any negligence in teaching. The results were bad because the students did not study regularly. She believes that not only the exam results but also the internal conflict within the school’s management committee may have played a role in the the failure. She confirmed that the two demands were accepted.
