A 40-year-old runner died after suffering a cardiac arrest while taking part in a marathon competition in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Tipu Sultan, a personal assistant to businessman Ashraf Pradhan, a candidate for chairman of Mograpara Union.

The incident occurred around 6:00am during the “Sonargaon 7.5K Run 2026,” organised by Sonargaon Runners.

According to organisers, the 7.5-kilometre race began at Aminpur Field in Panam Nagar. Tipu Sultan reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest after completing roughly half of the route, when he reached the Balua Dighirpar area.

Members of the organisers’ medical team immediately took him to Sonargaon Seba General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to Al Baraka Hospital in Madanpur for advanced treatment. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead.

Shimult Bhuiyan, chief organiser of the Sonargaon 7.5K Run 2026, said around 600 runners from different parts of the country participated in the event.

“Tipu Sultan was one of the participants. He was taken to hospital immediately after falling ill, but he died there,” he said.
