Ferdous Steel shipyard operations suspended after nine workers die

The Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board (BSRB) has suspended all operations at Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries in Sitakunda, Chattogram, following the deaths of nine workers in a toxic gas incident.

The suspension took effect on Saturday (August 15) and will remain in place until further notice, BSRB Director General ASM Shafiul Alam Talukdar said.

The workers died after being exposed to toxic gas inside the MT Rasi, an old vessel undergoing dismantling at the shipyard in Bhatiary on Friday morning.

Several other workers also fell ill and received treatment at hospital.

The BSRB said the shutdown would remain effective while the authorities assess safety measures and investigate the accident.
