The Election Commission (EC) has declared the nomination papers of BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, the presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, valid, clearing both for the presidential race.
Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, who is serving as the election officer for the presidential election, announced the decisions after scrutinising the nomination papers at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday (August 16).
Two nomination papers were submitted in the names of both Fakhrul and Oli. Under election rules, once one nomination paper is declared valid, the other is automatically cancelled.
Fakhrul is the presidential candidate of the ruling BNP, while Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is contesting as the candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.
The 23rd presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 20. A total of three nomination papers were submitted ahead of the election—one by BNP and two by the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.
The EC will formally announce the final list of valid candidates after completing the scrutiny process. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until 4pm on August 18.
Voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber on August 20, with 349 lawmakers eligible to cast their votes.
