Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Dr. Col. (retd.) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected the 23rd president of Bangladesh. The congratulatory message was issued on Thursday.
In the message, Oli Ahmed, the presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance, congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
Oli said, “I hope that, as the guardian of the state and the Constitution, the newly elected president will be able to discharge his responsibilities with firmness and competence in protecting independence, democracy and justice. I wish him good health and a long life.”
Earlier, speaking to reporters at his residence in Mohakhali DOHS, Oli Ahmed, the presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance, alleged that the BNP had rushed the presidential election. He said the outcome of the election had already been determined and that there was no possibility of any other result.
Oli said that under Article 70 of the Constitution, a lawmaker would lose his parliamentary seat if he voted against his party’s position. He noted that the BNP had pledged in its 31-point reform agenda to abolish Article 70 if it came to power.
He said there was a constitutional requirement to hold the election within 90 days, but he did not know why the BNP had rushed to arrange the election. “Perhaps they think that if the election is held without amendments, their candidate will win, while amendments could create problems for them,” he said.
Oli further claimed that according to surveys conducted by several organizations, 68 to 70 percent of people had voted in his favor, while 28 to 30 percent had voted for Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. “Through this, the people have clearly expressed their opinion,” he said.
Speaking about the powers of the president, the LDP chairman said there were three shrines and a mosque at Bangabhaban. “Apart from visiting these shrines and offering prayers at the mosque, there is little opportunity for the president to work independently,” he said. However, he expressed hope that a balance of power would be established in the future.
Oli Ahmed also said many young people had sacrificed their lives during the 2024 mass uprising for good governance and accountability. “Unless good governance and accountability are ensured in every sector, the people of the country will not be able to live in peace and happiness,” he said.
