A cargo vessel hit another anchored ship at the Alpha Anchorage area of Chattogram Port’s outer anchorage on Saturday night, though no major damage or casualties were reported.
Port Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim told Sara Bangla on Sunday that bulk carrier MV Anassa came into contact with the bow of anchored vessel MV Jahab Jahan around 12:35am due to strong currents.
“No one was injured. No water entered either vessel, and there was no environmental pollution,” he said.
The two vessels were moved and anchored at separate locations immediately after the incident. Vessel movement at the port is currently normal, the port secretary said.
A total of 21 crew members were aboard the two vessels, and all are safe.
The incident came just two days after another collision at the port’s waters. On Friday, the 33,000-tonne diesel tanker MT C Spike collided with anchored bulk carrier MV Sunshine. The tanker’s engine room sustained a crack, but no water entered its cargo tanks and no oil leakage was reported.
Meanwhile, on August 3, Malta-flagged container vessel MV CNC Uranus ran into trouble near the Karnaphuli estuary while entering the port after its steering system malfunctioned. The 170-metre vessel hit Buoy No. 2 before becoming stuck against a protective wall near the estuary.
On August 11, the master of MV CNC Uranus and its shipping agent were fined Tk1 crore for allegedly concealing the vessel’s steering problem while entering Chattogram Port.
