Folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi has been shown arrested in a Tk4.40 lakh cheque dishonour case.
Dhaka’s 5th Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sadiq Ahmed passed the order on Tuesday following an application by the plaintiff, according to bench assistant Shah Alam Mia.
According to case documents, Mujib was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Tk8.80 lakh in the case on November 21, 2007.
Of the fine, Tk5 lakh was ordered to be paid to the plaintiff, while Tk3.80 lakh was to be deposited with the state treasury.
The case was filed after Mujib allegedly took Tk4.40 lakh from the plaintiff in 2003, promising to send the plaintiff’s younger brother, Md Solayman Sardar, to England.
The plaintiff paid Tk2.20 lakh through a bank and the remaining Tk2.20 lakh in cash. After Mujib allegedly failed to send Solayman to England, the plaintiff demanded a refund.
Mujib subsequently issued two cheques for Tk2.20 lakh each, but both were dishonoured repeatedly due to insufficient funds. Despite receiving several legal notices, he allegedly failed to repay the money, prompting the plaintiff to file the case on June 1, 2004.
Mujib was earlier sent to jail on August 4 in another cheque dishonour case involving Tk10 lakh filed by Idris Ali Biswas in Magura in 2022.
In that case, Magura’s Second Joint Sessions Judge Muhammad Anwar Sadat sentenced him to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk10 lakh on March 15, 2023.
As Mujib was absconding when the verdict was delivered, the court issued an arrest warrant. He was later arrested by Uttara West police and produced before the court, after which he was sent to jail.
