The International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against 34 people, including former Rajshahi City Corporation mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, over alleged crimes against humanity during the July uprising in Rajshahi that left two people dead.
A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order on Tuesday.
The tribunal also ordered that four arrested accused — former Rajshahi-3 MP Md Asaduzzaman Asad, Dablu Sarkar, Zahirul Islam Rubel and Mohaiminul Islam Manik — be produced before the tribunal.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Zahirul Amin presented details of the alleged incidents and showed three videos to the tribunal. He identified several accused, including Zahirul, allegedly carrying firearms and opening fire.
The prosecution sought acceptance of the formal charges and arrest warrants against the absconding accused, as well as production warrants for those already arrested.
Following the hearing, the tribunal took cognisance of the charges against 38 people and ordered the warrants. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 17.
According to the prosecution, protesters were allegedly killed and injured in several areas of Rajshahi on August 5, 2024, during the mass uprising. Rayhan Ali was allegedly shot dead in front of Labanga Restaurant opposite Shekherchok Swachh Tower, while Anjum Sakib was killed in front of Shah Makhdum College. Several others, including Salman alias Shimul, were also injured.
The prosecution described the incidents in areas including Shekherchok, Shah Makhdum College, the Padma River embankment and Alupatti intersection as crimes against humanity.
The formal charges against the 38 accused were filed before the tribunal on July 30.
