Police have arrested three alleged members of a gang accused of drugging drivers to steal easy-bikes and auto-rickshaws in Nilphamari, recovering four auto-vans and an easy-bike.
Additional Superintendent of Police A B M Faizul Islam (Crime, Operations and Media) disclosed the information in a press release on Friday.
The arrestees are Mofizul Islam alias Haji of Panchpukur in Nilphamari Sadar, Robi Islam, 25, of Uttar Panchpukur Majhapara, and Rafiqul Islam, 45, of Chhatiangora in Khanসama Upazila of Dinajpur.
According to the press release, members of the alleged gang attempted to steal an auto-van after serving its driver tea mixed with a sedative at Palashbari Bazar in Nilphamari Sadar on the night of October 20.
When locals became suspicious, they detained one person and alerted the police. Officers took the sick driver to a hospital and brought the detained suspect to the police station for questioning.
Acting on information obtained during interrogation, police later conducted raids, arrested two other alleged gang members and recovered four auto-vans and an easy-bike.
Faizul Islam said investigators were questioning the arrestees to identify other members of the alleged theft ring. The suspects have reportedly been named in several theft cases.
Legal proceedings are being initiated against them, and they will be produced before a court, he added.
