Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to prepare a comprehensive action plan to increase Bangladesh’s carbon credits by reducing emissions and tapping opportunities in international carbon markets.
He gave the directive at a meeting on climate change held at the Prime Minister’s Office at the Secretariat, where he also outlined a series of measures to help the country earn more carbon credits, said Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
The Prime Minister emphasised expanding the use of renewable energy, promoting environmentally friendly technologies in industries, improving energy efficiency, protecting forests, and increasing tree plantation to enhance carbon absorption.
He also instructed officials to formulate a realistic strategy to harness Bangladesh’s potential in global carbon trading mechanisms.
Stressing transparency and accountability, Tarique called for improved management of carbon credits, the development of a reliable database, and stronger coordination with international organisations.
To streamline efforts, he directed the formation of a dedicated committee to enhance coordination among relevant ministries and agencies.
Officials at the meeting noted that effective emission reduction measures would strengthen Bangladesh’s position in earning carbon credits in line with international standards.
A carbon credit is an internationally recognised unit representing the reduction or removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.
Under global carbon trading systems, countries or organisations that cut emissions through afforestation, renewable energy adoption, improved efficiency, or cleaner technologies can earn carbon credits, which can then be sold to entities exceeding their emission limits.
Among others, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin, Special Assistant Dr SM Ziauddin Haider, Special Assistant Dr Saimum Parvez, along with secretaries of relevant ministries and senior officials, attended the meeting.
