Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said members of parliament will vote in line with their respective party decisions in the presidential election, as the Constitution has yet to be amended.

“There has been no amendment to the Constitution yet. So, the presidential election will be held in accordance with the provisions of the existing Constitution,” he told journalists before entering Parliament on Thursday.

The minister said a presidential election was being held constitutionally after 35 years, with candidates fielded by both the ruling and opposition parties.

He noted that presidents had been elected unopposed several times in the intervening period.

“A democratic election should be contested, and people across the country will witness this moment,” Salahuddin said, adding that the election would be broadcast live.

“I hope the people will witness the democratic practice they expect. Through this, our democracy will get a fresh start,” he said.
