The winner of Bangladesh’s 23rd presidential election will be announced in Parliament immediately after the votes are counted, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin said on Thursday.
He made the remarks after voting began in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber for the election of the country’s next president.
Speaking as the election officer, the CEC said members of Parliament would be allowed to remain present during both the voting and vote-counting processes. He urged lawmakers to cooperate in ensuring the smooth completion of the election.
In his welcome address, Nasir Uddin said MPs would elect the president through voting in accordance with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
Two candidates are contesting the election this time, he said.
Explaining the voting procedure, the CEC said the names of the candidates would be printed on the ballot paper. MPs would have to sign their full names to receive their ballots.
After receiving the ballot paper, lawmakers would be required to check whether the names of the contesting candidates were correctly printed on it before casting their votes.
Once voting is completed, the ballots will be counted in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
“The name of the candidate who receives the highest number of votes will be announced in Parliament itself,” the CEC said.
The presidential election is being held by MPs as stipulated by the Constitution, with the CEC serving as the election officer.
