Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was warmly congratulated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and opposition leaders after his landslide victory in Thursday’s presidential election.
After Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin announced the results, Mirza Fakhrul exchanged embraces with Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqure Rahman, Deputy Opposition Leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizens Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, along with other lawmakers.
Voting was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban from 2pm to 5pm. Of the 349 lawmakers, 343 cast their ballots. Mirza Fakhrul secured 255 votes, while his rival, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, the candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes.
At 5:20pm, the CEC declared Mirza Fakhrul the winner. Of the 349 printed ballots, 343 were used and all 343 were declared valid, while six remained unused.
When the result was announced, Mirza Fakhrul, who was seated beside the prime minister, stood and saluted Tarique Rahman with a gesture. The prime minister also stood, shook his hand and congratulated him with a red rose.
Mirza Fakhrul then greeted opposition leaders and lawmakers, including Shafiqure Rahman, Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nahid Islam, Jamaat leaders A T M Azharul Islam, Mujibur Rahman and Rafiqul Islam Khan.
He later embraced Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP lawmaker Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Social Welfare Minister A Z M Zahid Hossain and others.
