The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 is expected to begin commercial operations up to Kamalapur in April 2027, with trial runs on the extended section set to start in January, officials said on Sunday.

“The commercial operation on the extended line will commence in April next year, while test runs on the newly laid tracks will begin in January,” Project Director Brig Gen (retd) Md Abdul Wohab told BSS.
He said the trial runs would be conducted along the entire Uttara North-Kamalapur corridor during night-time after regular passenger services had ended.

According to project officials, about 77 per cent of the extension work had been completed by June this year, including the construction of a 1.16-kilometre viaduct, one station and rail tracks. Architectural finishing and entry-exit facilities at Kamalapur station are now under construction.

Officials said all major structural works at Kamalapur station, including piles, pile caps, piers, station columns, concourse roof, platform slabs, track slabs, parapet walls and the steel roof structure, have already been completed.

Installation of electrical systems, platform screen doors, signalling equipment and other operational facilities is expected to begin once the equipment arrives. Track-laying work is likely to be completed within the next two months.
Construction of station entry and exit points, interior wall tiling, fixed glass window installation and painting of indoor and outdoor areas is also progressing.

Meanwhile, 100 of the planned 298 precast concrete segments have already been cast at the Uttara Construction Yard for the remaining works.

Once completed, MRT Line-6 will stretch 21.26 kilometres from Uttara North to Kamalapur Railway Station, providing a direct rapid transit link between the capital’s northern suburbs and the
country’s largest rail terminal.

Commercial operations on the Uttara North-Motijheel section began in November 2023, marking the launch of Bangladesh’s first metro rail service. Extending the line to Kamalapur is expected to improve connectivity with the national railway network and ease traffic congestion in central Dhaka.
