The body of Mohammad Alimuzzaman Saju, one of seven Bangladeshis killed in a fire at a residential hotel in Kolkata, India, returned to Bangladesh through the Bhomra border on Saturday.

At around 12:10pm, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and immigration authorities handed over Saju’s body to Bangladeshi immigration officials at Bhomra Land Port. His brother Nurunnabi later received the body.

Relatives had been waiting at Saju’s home in Rabeya village of Kaliganj, Satkhira, since morning after learning that his body would be brought back. A grave had also been prepared near the family home.

Saju’s elder brother Saheb Sardar said the burial would take place at the family cemetery after the funeral prayer later in the afternoon.

Sajib Bala, in-charge of immigration police at Bhomra Land Port, said the body was handed over by the BSF and Indian immigration authorities in the presence of Bangladeshi officials. Saju’s brother received it in the presence of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and immigration police.

Nine people, including seven Bangladeshis, were killed in a devastating fire at a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata’s New Market area early on August 19. The bodies of five of the Bangladeshi victims are being repatriated through the Benapole border, while Saju’s body returned through Bhomra.
