The bodies of six of the seven Bangladeshis killed in a hotel fire in Kolkata have been repatriated to Bangladesh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday.

The victims were among nine people killed in the devastating fire at a hotel in Kolkata, West Bengal, on Wednesday, August 19.

The ministry said the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata had been coordinating with local authorities and the victims’ families since the incident to facilitate the repatriation process.

The body of Satkhira’s SM Alimuzzaman was brought into Bangladesh through the Ghojadanga-Bhomra border on Saturday morning and handed over to his family.

The bodies of Kushtia’s Debashish Dutta and three members of the same family—Afsana Sharmin, Sharnashish Dutta and Mohammad Akram Ali—were brought home through the Petrapole-Benapole border in the afternoon. The body of Babu Ahmed of Aminbazar, Dhaka, was also repatriated through the same border.

The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata provided necessary assistance to the families throughout the process, including the preservation, transportation and repatriation of the bodies.

Meanwhile, the body of Repti Sarkar of Satkhira was cremated in Kolkata on Friday night in accordance with her family’s wishes. The deputy high commission also provided financial and other necessary assistance in the matter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep grief over the deaths and conveyed its condolences to the bereaved families.
