Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has moved into Bangabhaban, the official residence of the president, leaving his ministerial residence in the capital’s Minto Road area.
He entered Bangabhaban at around 11am on Sunday (August 23).
As his motorcade arrived at the Bangabhaban premises, a ceremonial mounted cavalry unit welcomed the president and escorted his convoy inside. Later, a smartly turned-out contingent of the armed forces presented him with a guard of honour at Bangabhaban Lane.
Following the formalities, President Mirza Fakhrul entered Bangabhaban. From now on, he will reside at the state residence and conduct his official duties from there.
Under state protocol, the president is required to move into Bangabhaban after assuming the country’s highest constitutional office.
On Friday evening (August 21), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took oath as the country’s 23rd president at the historic Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
Earlier, he won the presidential election held in Parliament on August 20, becoming the first president to be elected after a gap of 35 years. The BNP-nominated candidate secured 255 votes, while Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and presidential candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, received 88 votes.
