Pvt electricity distribution could raise consumer costs by 20%: CAB Adviser

Privatising electricity distribution could increase consumers’ electricity costs by around 20 percent, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Energy Adviser Prof. M Shamsul Alam has warned.

He made the remarks while discussing proposals to hand electricity distribution to private companies.

According to him, such a move could ultimately put additional financial pressure on consumers.

Shamsul Alam has long advocated greater transparency, accountability and efficiency in the power sector, while cautioning against policies that could shift additional costs onto consumers.

The warning comes amid ongoing discussions over electricity pricing and reforms in Bangladesh’s power sector, where the government is seeking ways to reduce subsidies and contain rising generation and fuel costs.
