Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaykobad has warned that the government will take strict measures to prevent incidents of sexual abuse and other indecent acts in madrasas.

He described such incidents as regrettable and stressed the need to prevent their recurrence.

The minister made the remarks while attending the triennial council session of the Bangladesh National Imam Association in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Saturday morning.

Speaking to reporters after the event, he said imams had been instructed to raise awareness to ensure that such reprehensible incidents do not occur in religious institutions like madrasas.

Addressing imams from across the country at the conference, Kaykobad also urged them to remain vigilant against attempts to undermine religious harmony through provocation.

He said imams should use Friday sermons to speak strongly against social crimes, including drug abuse and terrorism, noting that they enjoy considerable public trust and acceptance.

During the event, leaders of the Imam Association also raised various concerns and demands, including calls for increased salaries and allowances.
