Sudden flash floods triggered by heavy rain have caused widespread damage in Khagrachhari, destroying or damaging more than 100 mud-built homes and affecting 278 hectares of crops across three upazilas.
The flooding hit low-lying areas after heavy rain late Friday night. Rising water in the Boalkhali canal then swept through nearby settlements, causing walls and parts of many earthen houses to collapse.
More than 100 homes were damaged in several areas of Dighinala, including Jamtoli, Mayafapara and Sudhir Member Para, according to local residents and officials.
Dighinala Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanzil Parvez said most of the affected houses were made of mud and that many residents were caught off guard as floodwater entered homes late at night.
Local authorities are assessing the extent of the damage. Cooked meals are being distributed, with dry food also being prepared for affected families.
The floods have also severely damaged farmland. About 160 hectares of crops were affected in Dighinala alone, including 120 hectares of Aman paddy, 17 hectares of Aus paddy and 20 hectares of summer vegetables.
Including Khagrachhari Sadar and Panchhari upazilas, the total crop damage stands at around 278 hectares, said Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, deputy director of the District Agricultural Extension Department.
Farmers have urged the government to provide emergency assistance, while the agriculture department said it would prepare a list of affected farmers and arrange support.
Local officials said poultry and fish farms, roads and other infrastructure were also affected by the sudden flooding.
