Heavy overnight rain and mountain runoff have flooded low-lying areas of Khagrachhari, leaving thousands of people in distress.
The flooding occurred late Friday night after one to one-and-a-half hours of heavy rain and a sudden surge of water from the hills.
Several areas, including Muslim Para, Kaladeba, Ganjpara, Footbil and Khbong Poriya, were inundated. As water levels rose rapidly, many residents were forced to leave their homes and take shelter on roads and in nearby shops.
Residents said the sudden flooding submerged homes, killed poultry and damaged croplands, leaving many families with significant losses.
The Khagrachhari deputy commissioner said the administration was arranging dry food and shelter for those affected and would provide assistance as quickly as possible.
