The United States has removed Syria from its designation as a “state sponsor of terrorism” and lifted the terrorist designation previously imposed on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to an announcement by the US Treasury Department.

The decision is expected to expand Syria’s access to international trade and investment, potentially supporting the country’s economic recovery and reconstruction.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the move reflects President Donald Trump’s commitment to giving the Syrian people an opportunity to shape their own future.

The Trump administration had earlier eased some sanctions on Syria following political changes in the country and cited steps taken by President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government against terrorism.

US officials said the latest decision could help attract new investment, strengthen economic and political stability, and support Syria’s long-term reconstruction.
