Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed, who is in army custody in connection with the murder of former Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul Haque, was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday morning.
He was brought to the tribunal at around 9:45 a.m. in connection with the case filed over the alleged crimes against humanity surrounding Ekramul’s killing in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.
Earlier, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) confirmed that Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed had been taken into army custody in connection with the Ekramul Haque murder case. In a statement, ISPR said further action would be taken against him in accordance with the law.
On Sunday, the prosecution submitted a formal charge to the International Crimes Tribunal over Ekramul Haque’s death in an alleged “gunfight” in Teknaf. A total of 11 people, including ousted and fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have been accused in the case.
Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed, who was the commander of the then RAB-7 (Chattogram), is also named in the list of accused. At the time, Cox’s Bazar was under the jurisdiction of RAB-7.
Miftah Uddin Ahmed was taken into army custody just one day after the prosecution submitted the formal charge before the tribunal.
Ekramul Haque was killed in an alleged “gunfight” in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on the night of May 26, 2018. He had served as president of the Teknaf upazila unit of the Jubo League, whose activities are currently banned, for around 12 years.
