At least six people have been killed in a massive Russian aerial assault on Ukraine, which also left parts of the capital, Kyiv, without electricity.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had launched a large-scale attack targeting Ukraine’s communications and energy infrastructure, Al Jazeera reported.

Following the strikes, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in safe shelters. Private electricity supplier DTEK said the attacks disrupted power services in several areas of the capital.

Three people were killed in Kyiv’s Desnianskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, while three others died in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. Missile attacks were also reported in Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Chernihiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had received no advance warning from its Western allies. Accusing Moscow of violating a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump, he said Russia had deliberately targeted energy infrastructure covered by the truce.

The attack amounted to an open display of disregard for Washington, Zelenskyy said.

Meanwhile, Russia claimed it had intercepted 902 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 180 heading towards the capital.
